Walk into any yoga studio (or just go on Instagram) and you will see that there is a dazzling array of striking legging out there for women who want to practice yoga, or do anything else for that matter. But what about men?
When doing yoga, not just any pair of pants you will do. No one wants to hear a ripping sound as you go into splits, reveal too much at the back when you bend over or too much at the front in leg raises, or simply not be able to get into the positions without the fabric of your pants digging painfully into your flesh.

Who said yoga pants can’t be cool?
Mens yoga pants aren’t so common, so for males finding the right pair of yoga pants can be challenging, as it is not simply a matter of choosing a pair of leggings in your favourite colour. But rest assured, there are people out there making trousers specifically for male yoga practitioners.

Yoga Pants for Men: Buying Guide
When looking for a pair of male yoga pants, it is great to just start looking for things that you like, but then assess them against our checklist of important features to see if they really are a good choice for practicing yoga.
Length
The first thing to consider is the length of the pants. Obviously, in winter long pants are a winner, but in summer, you might want to go for a pair of shorts. But the question then becomes how short. There are many yoga poses that can leave you quite exposed when wearing shorts. Are the shorts you are looking at too short?
If you do want something shorter, something that goes to just below the knee is often a good choice.
Also remember that just because it is hot does not necessarily mean that shorts are a good idea. When it is very hot, you can start sweating. If you find yourself with sweaty legs not covered by trousers to soak it up, you can find yourself slipping around a bit in certain poses. So, just because you are a sweater does not mean you should necessarily go for shorts.
Tightness
In order to give yourself the range of motion that you need around the hips, you need to consider the tightness of the pants. Ideally, you want to go with something loose that has a lot of room, or something stretchy, which is likely to be right but still allow you to move.
Any pair of shorts of tracksuit pants might be loose around the hips, it just depends on the cut and style. Look for things with a drop crotch or a wider leg. If you want something with a lot of space, consider harem of fisherman’s pants.
Anything with a bit of elastic in it will offer you a bit more space to move. If you want to take this to its ultimate level, then you can invest in a pair of men’s leggings. Tight fitting, they are designed to feel like a second skin.
But, while these a great for movement, they can leave little to the imagination around the crotch, and you don’t want to feel self-conscious while tying to get into the yoga zone.
You can limit this by choosing a dark colour, which will show less, or you can wear a loose pair of shorts over the top.
If you are looking at leggings, you might also consider compression pants, which many athletes claim support muscles and joints during physical activity, and improve circulation. Whether you are a fan of compression or not, you should be aware of this, as you also don’t want to end up with a pair of compression leggings if they are not what you are looking for.
Material
We’ve already indicated the benefits of having a bit of stretch in the fabric of the trousers, which generally means a bit of Lycra, but this is not the only thing to consider.
Natural fabrics like cotton or linen tend to be very breathable and therefore help you to keep cool. At the same time, synthetic fabrics such as Lycra, Nylon or Spandex generally have moisture wicking properties that help pull sweat away from your skin and leave you feeling dry.
A natural-synthetic blend will hopefully embody the best of both, but look out for words such as breathable and moisture-wicking when choosing your trousers.
Stitching
When choosing your yoga pants, you are going to want to look at quality stitching that is not going to start to unravel with heavy use. You don’t want to get to the Upavistha Konasana (Seated Wide Legged Straddle) pose near the end of the session to see that the seam in the crotch of your pants has come apart and you are looking at a hole. How long has it been there? Who was behind you when you were doing those downward dog poses?
You need quality yoga pants that aren’t going to let you down. But while the seems need to be strong, they can’t be bulky, as this just leaves you with something to run against and irritate your skin.
Quality
There are a lot of different ways to interpret quality, but for me, it is something that is not going to lose its shape after a few uses, and it is something that doesn’t go see-through when you bend over.
This can be difficult to determine when purchasing pants, especially if you buy online. So, this is when it is a good idea to look at other customer reviews. If customers found themselves encountering embarrassing see-through or seem breaking moment, or the pants lost their shape after only a few weeks, they will likely go online to vent their frustration (and reasonably so).
Versatility
If you buy yourself a very comfortable pair of pants, you may well want to use them for something more than just yoga. If you plan on taking your trousers to the street, you will need to think about things like the fit, especially with leggings, and also whether they have pockets and the like to make them useful when doing other things.
Style
Finally, yoga is a practice that is supposed to make you feel good about yourself, and we often feel our best when we are wearing clothing that is comfortable, flattering, and we like. Feeling good can enhance our practice, so it is not something to be overlooked. Take the time to find colours and styles that appeal.
But do consider how style features might impact our practice. For example, any raised features around the stomach or waist might become an uncomfortable lump in certain lying down poses. Stylish tightly cuffed ankles can also hinder movement even in baggy trousers.
So, find something that you love, but don’t put style over function.
Avoid
There are so many different styles of yoga pants for men out there that there is no rule for what is right, but, there are a few things that should be avoided:
- Anything that is too tight, especially around the crotch and hips, as this will restrict your movement. Also look out for the new trend for tightness around the calves.
- Anything that is transparent, or will go transparent when stretched.
- Low cut options, as these will likely slide down and reveal too much when in certain poses.
- Short shorts, as these can reveal too much when opening your legs.
- Any features that might dig into you or the floor when doing certain movements.
If you avoid these pitfalls, you will probably find a pair of men’s yoga pants that you are happy with.
FAQs Yoga Pants for Men
What should guys wear to yoga?
Everyone who goes to yoga needs to wear comfortable clothes that allows them a full range of motion. When it comes to pants, this generally means something loose with lots of space to move, or something tight and elasticated.
You also want to look out for pants that will keep you dry and cool, and don’t have details that will dig into you when getting into more challenging yoga poses.
Does Yoga help sexually?
Studies have shown that yoga can boost a man’s sex drive and performance. This is probably mainly due to decreased stress and anxiety, and increased blood flow to the genital area. Yoga has become very popular with men in recent years – maybe this has something to do with it!
Is it OK to do Yoga every day?
Yes, you can do yoga every day, though it can depend on the type of yoga. If you are doing highly athletic yoga, such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa, you might want to give yourself a few rest days each week to let your muscles recuperate and return stronger. But on these days, you can practice gentler forms of yoga, such as Hatha, which is designed to be restorative.
Is it normal to fart during Yoga?
Yes, it is normal to fart during yoga. Many of the movements are designed to massage the abdominal organs, which can release gas from the digestive tract, that needs to go somewhere.
Mens Yoga Pants: The Verdict
Men need special yoga pants for the same reasons that women do: comfort and freedom of movement. While the make yoga pants market is behind that of the ladies, there are no plenty of options on the market, some designed specifically for yoga, and others designed for other purposes but which still work week as male yoga pants.
The main things to look for when choosing the right yoga pants for you are something that give you the full range of motion that you need, without revealing too much, or digging into you uncomfortably in any of the more challenging poses. Breathable and moisture wicking fabrics will also make your practice more comfortable.
But more than that, you should choose something that you feel good wearing. Yoga is a joyful practice which is about feeling good in your own body. Wearing clothes that make you feel good can contribute to that and help enhance your practice. Choosing stylish men’s yoga pants that you love is about psychology as well as aesthetics.
